Boba Fett will reportedly return in The Mandalorian season 2—but didn’t he get swallowed by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi?
The Original Bounty Hunter Returns
Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, will reportedly appear in the second season of The Mandalorian as Boba Fett.
My first reaction was, “Huh?”
Sure, Boba Fett is a clone of Jango, so they would look the same, but wouldn’t Boba Fett would be in his early 40s by the time of The Mandalorian? Whereas Temuera Morrison is going to turn 60 this year. (He would, however, be the perfect age to play Captain Rex, who is also a clone of Jango Fett.)
Then again, if Boba Fett doesn’t remove his helmet, Morrison could dub his voice, as he did for the Episode V Special Edition, with a stunt double playing Fett inside the suit. (Similarly, Din Djarin was reportedly portrayed by two doubles wearing the armor and voiced by Pedro Pascal).
But wait. Didn’t Boba Fett die in Return of the Jedi?
Hey, this is Star Wars, where nobody stays dead. Even if they’ve been sliced in half or thrown down an endless chasm.
In a 1996 comic book, Boba Fett escaped from the Sarlacc pit by blowing up his jet pack inside. This doesn’t quite jibe with the Unleashed figure that Hasbro released in 2003, which has Fett blasting his way out of the man-eating squidhole.
Star Wars: The Saga Collection Boba Fett Unleashed by Hasbro
I bought this Target exclusive for $20—a bargain by today’s standards. These days, a new, 3.75″ Star Wars figure could set you back $14 if you’re lucky enough to find it on the shelf.
This is a magnificent piece that stands over 10″ tall. However, it shouldn’t really be considered an action figure: There is only one point of articulation, at his right wrist. Hasbro’s Unleashed figures are more like statues.
Slip a puck light underneath the translucent base and you have a pretty spectacular jet blast.
The sculpting on this piece is top-notch: The dents in the armor. The stitching on his pockets. There’s even a fabric texture on his suit and cape.
This Boba Fett Unleashed figure makes for an awesome scene but did it ever really take place in the Star Wars universe? Maybe we’ll find out when new episodes of The Mandalorian hit Disney Plus this fall.
